Colleagues help Miss. fire dept. destroyed by tornado

The tornado flattened the station, destroyed equipment and fire trucks

BILOXI, Miss. — A volunteer fire department’s firehouse was destroyed in the aftermath of a Dec. 23 tornado.

Sun Herald reported that the Three Forks (Miss.) Volunteer Fire Department’s metal roof was thrown across the street, support beams crushed three fire trucks and a rescue vehicle. All of their equipment was ruined.

“It’s a kick in the butt when you drive up to get your stuff to help people and you don’t have anything to help them with,” Chief Joey Jackson said. “I can’t explain the feeling. Everything was gone.”

The Biloxi (Miss.) Fire Department is looking to send Three Forks a spare pumper truck. Another department is donating a fire hose and fire officials are soliciting equipment and supplies from other departments.

Chief Jackson said neighboring departments will be dispatched for calls in the meantime, but is grateful for the help from other departments.

“Firefighting is one big brotherhood,” Chief Jackson said. “When one’s affected, we’re all affected.”
