PHOENIX, Ariz. — A firefighter and U.S. Army captain was found dead while on active duty at a military base.

ABC15 reported that 15-year Phoenix Fire Department veteran and U.S. Army Captain Juston Doherty was found at the Arizona Army National Guard after dying of an unknown cause, according to fire department officials.

The PFD said Capt. Doherty was a highly-decorated Army Captain, and he also recently received the Medal of Valor from the department for saving children trapped in a fire while off duty.

“Juston Doherty was a cherished and decorated ‘larger than life’ member of the Phoenix Fire Department,” Captain Rob McDade said. “His sudden passing creates a void in our family that will be difficult to overcome. His energy, spirit and commitment to service was an invaluable asset to our membership and will be greatly missed.”
