Off-duty Calif. firefighter fatally shot, another injured

The firefighters were with a group of colleagues at a local festival when several men confronted them

SAN JOSE, Calif. — An off-duty probationary Oakland firefighter died and another was injured after a shooting Thursday night.

NBC Bay Area reported that the two firefighters attended a local festival with some colleagues when they were confronted by a group of men. It is unknown what caused the shooting.

One firefighter, 30, was pronounced dead after suffering critical injuries. The second firefighter, 26, was shot once but is in stable condition.

A large procession of firefighters went to the hospital to hold watch overnight.

Police said a suspect left the scene on foot, but has not been found.
