SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The body of a missing fire captain was found in a canyon, according to police.

NBC Los Angeles reported that police are investigating the circumstances of Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain Wayne Habell’s death after his body was found at Hot Springs Canyon Trail in Santa Barbara.

A news release said police first found an SUV registered to Habell near the trail on Friday. A passersby said a suspicious vehicle had been parked near the area since Monday, and a man was seen walking alone along the trail, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Kevin Huddle.

An extensive search was conducted Friday and Saturday by police and search and rescue team members.

Habell was last seen Monday as he was reportedly leaving for the gym. His colleagues said it wasn’t like him to disappear.

“It’s not his normal self (that) he would do this,” Fire Inspector Gustavo Medina said.

According to LACFD Capt. Adam Clint, Habell’s former colleague, Habell’s wife said her husband suffered from depression.
