MASSILLON, Ohio — One of the worst tragedies involving safety forces in the city’s history and possibly that of Stark County occurred on a late Sunday afternoon four decades ago.

Today is the 40th anniversary of the fatal fire at La Cuisina Restaurant, in which Massillon firefighters Kenneth Arnold, Donald Roseman and Frank Urwin were killed on Nov. 30, 1975, when a series of makeshift bombs exploded inside the eatery located in the 1700 block of Lincoln Way E.

Mike Canfora, a 19-year Massillon firefighter and president of the firefighter’s union, said it’s an honor to carry on the tradition of recognizing fallen comrades, such as those lost at La Cuisina. “We fight and argue just like any family, but we (firefighters) really pull together at times like this,” said Canfora, referring to today’s ceremony, which will pay tribute to all firefighters, locally, nationally and worldwide.
