FAYETTE COUNTY, Ala. — A Fayette County firefighter has died after being in a fire apparatus crash while returning from a house fire on Feb. 5.

The Fayette Police Department told WBRC that the Lawrence Mill Volunteer Fire Department fire chief found the crash scene and the veteran firefighter inside the apparatus.

A Facebook post identified the fallen firefighter as Tony Baumgartner. He was reported to be one of the founding members of the fire department.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is investigating the incident, WBMA reported.

The Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa has sent a chaplain and support team to assist the firefighter’s family and the fire department.
