LA RUE, Ohio — The Scioto Valley Fire District is investigating a fatal fire that involved a mayday call Saturday, WCMH reported Monday.
Crews responded to an 8:30 p.m. report of a two-story building with a person inside. Heavy smoke was coming from both sides of the building, but firefighters went in to look for anyone who might be inside.
Crewmembers became trapped, and a mayday call was sent for firefighters to get out of the home.
Crews from 13 other departments also worked on the fire amid freezing temperatures and water supply issues, the Scioto Valley Fire District said.
The body of a 74-year-old man who was later identified as the homeowner was found at about 11:15 a.m.
The fire district, the Marion County Sheriff’s and Coroner’s office, and the State Fire Marshall’s office are investigating.
