GARY, Ind. — A 2-year-old pronounced dead at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary had multiple bruises and a ligature mark around her neck when two people flagged down a Gary fire engine at the Gary-Lake Station border Sunday morning, Gary police said.

A woman and man stopped Gary Fire Engine 12 near 15th Avenue and Lake Street about 9:30 a.m. and asked for help with a child wrapped in a blanket, the police report states.

Both the woman and firefighters noted the child’s body appeared cold. The woman said she was contacted by a man who was babysitting who said the child was not breathing. The woman went to the home in Lake Station and was driving the babysitter and child to the hospital when they encountered the fire truck, the report states.

The child had new and old bruises on her face and other injuries, police said.

Neither the Lake County coroner nor Lake Station police returned calls Monday afternoon from the Post-Tribune seeking additional information.
