CAMPBELLSBURG, Ky. — A firefighter died Thursday after participating in a search and rescue drill.

LEX18 reported that Thomas McBride, 60, with Campbellsburg Fire and Rescue, said he was having a difficult time breathing during the drill. He started to feel better after taking his breathing apparatus off and cooling down, and asked to return to training.

McBride was instead assigned to operate the engine pump, where he later collapsed.

The 42-year veteran firefighter was transported to the hospital where he died shortly after.

McBride is survived by his two children and grandson.
