HILLSBORO, Mo. — A volunteer firefighter was killed in a crash Tuesday after his vehicle spun out of control on the highway.

Officials said 25-year-old Zach Crowley’s vehicle crossed the centerline, was hit by another vehicle and knocked into a ditch. Hillsboro Assistant Chief Brian Gaudet said he died almost instantly.

“It’s been a tough day here for everyone. It’s a tough loss on our current firefighters, and what they’re having to go through in having to run on one of their own,” Chief Gaudet told KSDK.

Crowley leaves behind his wife and one- and three-year-old children. Colleagues have begun collecting toys and donations for his family.

“Zach was just a great guy who always wanted to help the community. He just always had the heart to help anyone and everyone he could,” Chief Gaudet said.
