SAN FRANCISCO — The city’s first LGBT fire chief, only the second woman to hold the position, was appointed by the mayor in a Wednesday announcement.
NBC Bay Area reported that San Francisco Mayor London Breed appointed Jeanine Nicholson, a deputy chief at the San Francisco Fire Department to replace outgoing Chief Joanne Hayes-White, the first woman to ever hold the position.
“My time serving as chief of the department has been a distinct honor and has been incredibly rewarding,” Hayes-White said when her retirement was announced last year. “I am proud to have advanced health, wellness and safety initiatives in our workplaces.”
Nicholson, in addition to her other accolades, is also a breast cancer survivor, KTVU reported.
