CAMBRIA, N.Y. — The Pekin Fire Company announced Tammy Snelgrove as their newly elected chief during an installation dinner Saturday night, making her Niagara County’s first female to hold a volunteer fire chief’s position.

Her duties begin Jan. 1 when she takes over for the present chief, Kevin Beutel, who will remain with the company after serving as chief for 12 years.

While accepting the nomination during the same week the military declared female soldiers fit for combat roles, Snelgrove took great pride in the breakthrough. More than 150 people gathered Saturday to honor the new chief, including Sheriff James R. Voutour and state Assemblyman John D. Ceretto, D-Lewiston, who recognized her with plaques and citations.
