NJ dept. hires Navy vet as first female career firefighter

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. — A new recruit joined the ranks of the Perth Amboy Fire Department as its first paid female firefighter.

Arielle Bonilla, 24, was sworn in Monday, reported nj.com. Bonilla served five years in the Navy and was deployed on three military operations in the Middle East.

“I hope little girls will see me, and I can be a hero in their eyes,” Bonilla told ABC7. “That they can follow their dreams.”

The city will also swear in four other recruits.
