FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Two grandparents and their grandson are clinging to life, the boy ripped from their burning home by two firefighters who braved 10-foot flames to go in and pull him out.

The grandmother awoke to fast-spreading flames in their living room. All four people inside were burned, three of them are in critical condition. A dog also was reported killed. Inside at the time were grandparents Barbara and Terrance Ponders, who were flown to a burn unit in Miami.

Their grandson, 8-year-old Demetrius, ran to the back of the home in fear and passed out from heavy smoke and flames. The others were too badly injured to go back in to get him. Demtrius could have died inside -- he is also badly burned -- but he was pulled out by Engine 4’s St. Lucie County Fire Rescue Lt. Steve Burns and Lt. Chris Longo. Described as minutes of pure desperation, Antonio Andrews grabbed a garden hose as his family’s home on Juanita Avenue in Fort Pierce went up in flames.
