HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Austin Phillips was named Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department’s new chief April 13 as a 20-year-old man, holding his new responsibility as one of the youngest fire chiefs in the U.S.
Harrison Township trustees named Phillips fire chief after he served as the previous assistant fire chief. He now leads a team of 15 individuals with five fire trucks as the third chief of the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department. One of those trucks holds as much as 5,000 gallons of water.
Phillips, of Sunnyside Drive, has been surrounded by family members running firefighting calls and services for as long as he can remember. In the third grade, he remembers a young girl’s home that had burned, and she had lost a pencil collection. He, his aunt and grandmother collected some pencils in an attempt to aid the young girl.
