FILLMORE, Calif. — Fillmore’s fire chief and assistant city manager, Rigo Landeros, died Thursday evening, city officials announced Friday.
It is unclear when and where he died. An exam to determine the exact cause of death is being done Friday morning, officials said.
In a statement, Mayor Diane McCall said the death was a “shock to so many in our community.”
“Chief Landeros was widely known and respected throughout Fillmore and the county of Ventura as an energetic and forward-thinking public official who always was upbeat with a love of family, community and public service,” City Manager David Rowlands said in a statement.
“He was instrumental in helping Fillmore work its way though the recent recessionary period and return the city’s financial picture to full solvency.”
Landeros started with the fire department as a volunteer firefighter in 1998 and was appointed chief in 2009, officials said. He served as public works director and interim city manager. Before he came to Fillmore, Landeros was an executive with Gelson’s Markets, officials said.
