DREXEL HILL, Pa. — Garrettford-Drexel Hill Volunteer Fire Company Deputy Fire Chief Mike Morgan,48, died Sunday morning after being hospitalized since his stroke on May 9.
Morgan began feeling ill during or shortly after responding to two fire calls on May 3. His condition worsened after he reported for his midnight shift at the Delawre County Emergency Communications Center before being transported via ambulance to a hospital.
“The immense loss that the world suffered this morning can simply not be put into words,” the fire department’s Facebook page read in announcing Chief Morgan’s death. He had been moved to Hospice care the previous Friday.
Chief Morgan was a 31-year veteran of the volunteer department and someone colleagues described as extremely dedicated to firefighting and the community. He also served as a 911 dispatcher for Delaware County for about 30 years.
He began his career as a junior firefighter with the Clifton Heights Fire Company before moving to Garrettford-Drexel Hill, where he served as a board of director, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and deputy chief.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, Pa. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at St. Dorothy’s Church, 4910 W. Township Line Rd., Drexel Hill. Internment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pa.
