LAKEWOOD, N.J. — A volunteer fire chief died Sunday after a vehicle struck his motorcycle.

The Asbury Park Press reported that 52-year-old David “Rudy” Gaines, with the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, was traveling in the right lane when 28-year-old Aurohom Zeffren tried to change lanes.

Zeffren told police that he did not see Chief Gaines.

“He was a longtime Lakewood resident who was always trying to help people here,” Sgt. Frank Work said of Gaines. “He’s a name in Lakewood that is known for all the good reasons.”

The accident remains under investigation.
