NOVA SCOTIA, Canada — What may have seemed like a routine fire services call took a tragic turn April 11 as a local firefighter succumbed to cardiac arrest at the scene. Deputy Fire Chief Andy McDade, of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department, says Brooklyn was called to assist with a working garage fire along Hwy 202 in Gore around 4:30 p.m.

“Two out of three bays were fully involved and venting through the roof,” McDade said in an interview April 12.

McDade says firefighters dousing the flames were soon tasked with responding to another emergency that hit very close to home. “While en route to the scene, one of the other fire departments had a medical emergency and we had a firefighter die that was responding to the call,” he said.
