GULFPORT, Miss. — Gulfport will be reaching out to a Mississippi town in need of support Wednesday by donating a fire truck, officials said.
Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt said they will donate a 1999 fire truck to the town of Kilmichael at 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1 in Gulfport.
Kilmichael is a small town of just under 700 in population, located in Montgomery County, about 90 minutes north of Jackson.
“We were touched by the outpouring of support we received after Katrina,” he said. “Now, we are in the position to return the favor to a city in need.”
Through contacts Councilman R. Lee Flowers has made with officials in Kilmichael, Gulfport leaders became aware of Kilmichael’s desperate need for a fire truck.
He worked with leadership in the fire department and administration to make this donation become a reality, Beyerstedt said.
