Pa. fire department adds aerial ladder to its fleet

The vehicle cost $636,000, which was paid for with money raised through the company’s fund drive

WEST NORRITON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — In 104 years of firefighting service to the residents and businesses of West Norriton Township, Jefferson Fire Company No. 1 never had an aerial ladder in its fleet till now.

There was no need, firefighter Jason Burton pointed out, since just about every fire emergency was a ground-level house or brush fire.

“If you look at the pictures we have of our fire apparatus in our company’s history, you will notice that not one of our trucks has a ladder on it. The fire trucks we had, which were mostly pumpers, were adequate for fighting the type of fires we were dealing with.”
