The Chattanooga Fire Department introduced its new fire-rescue boat to the local news media today. Though not fully operational, the boat and a hand-picked crew of Chattanooga firefighters have been asked to provide a safety standby for this weekend’s powerboat races on Chickamauga Lake. It will take weeks or even months of training before the boat is fully operational.
The 27-foot Vigilant Boston Whaler boasts two Mercury 250 horsepower outboard engines, and is equipped with a 750 gpm (gallons per minute) fire pump. It is also equipped with the latest navigation and electronic equipment. The fire department was able to purchase this unique piece of equipment with a Homeland Security grant.
