Fire Station Design Symposium Extends Registration Deadline

What to Know Before You Build

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Fire Industry Equipment Research Organization (F.I.E.R.O.) will host its annual Fire Station Design Symposium, billed as “the premier source for the latest in fire station design and construction.” In an effort to keep costs low for attendees, the early registration deadline has been extended to September 18th. The Symposium, co-sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and FireRescue Magazine, began in 2000 and is recognized as the first of its kind. It provides a comprehensive venue for fire service professionals to learn about the process of designing and building a fire station.

Symposium Offers Important Design Criteria
The F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium October 5-7, 2006, brings industry experts from the fire service as well as architects together in a central setting to learn through formal presentations and informal interaction. Fire stations are a major capital expenditure for any community, and as the cost of construction and demands for service increase, it is imperative that stakeholders in fire station design and construction learn as much as possible before they begin the process. For the first time, part of the symposium will offer concurrent seminars with educational offerings for first time attendees as well as those who have attended before. In addition, there is an exhibit area for vendors showcasing a variety of products used in fire stations.

Design Awards Added
New for this year’s symposium is the Station Design Award Program. Fire departments and architectural firms can submit their designs in the competition. The awards will recognize excellence in design and construction and will be open to architectural and design firms as well as the fire facilities themselves. The Design Award submittals will be on display for attendees to study, learn from and get ideas. Categories include New Construction, “On-the-Boards”, Renovations and Adaptations. Sally Young, F.I.E.R.O. Board Member commented, “The Fire Station Award program is intended to highlight and recognize what works in fire facility design.”
