LAFD Firefighters ‘Sound The Alert’ Regarding Diabetes

The Los Angeles Fire Department joins the American Diabetes Association to ‘Sound the Alert’ for the more than six million Americans who have diabetes - but don’t know it!

March 28, 2006 is the 18th Annual American Diabetes Alert Day

To help people better recognize their own risk, our friends at the American Diabetes Association have a simple, seven-question on-line Diabetes Risk Test: http://www.diabetes.org/risktest

As Firefighters and Paramedics, we see instances daily - often hourly, where early recognition and treatment of diabetes could better the lives of Los Angeles residents. That’s why we are proud to be a part of this once-yearly effort to educate people about
diabetes risk factors and warning signs.

Yes, you could be among the millions who are completely unaware they have diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States and 1.5 million people are diagnosed each year.

Neighborhood Firefighters are pleased to make a Diabetes Risk Test brochure available this week at Fire Stations throughout Los Angeles. The informative brochure is also available by calling 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383).
