Paul Turner Joins Thales as Director of Internal Research and Development

CLARKSBURG, Md. - Thales Communications, Inc., is pleased to announce that Paul Turner has joined the company in the newly-created position of director, internal research and development (IR&D). Mr. Turner is responsible for the company’s overall IR&D strategy and implementation.

Mr. Turner comes to Thales Communications from Lockheed Martin, where, most recently, he held the position of chief engineer on the Airborne Maritime Fixed Joint Tactical Radio System program. Previous assignments in Lockheed Martin included systems engineering management, proposal management, business development, and program management with key roles on the Warfighter Information Network-Tactical and the Tactical Common Data-Link teams.

“Paul’s leadership will further enhance Thales Communications’ ability to deliver advanced communications technologies and system solutions with maximum benefit to the warfighter,” said Lewis Johnston, Thales’ vice president of advanced programs.

Mr. Turner was awarded a bachelor of science degree in physics/mathematics from Henderson State University and is an MBA candidate in technology management at the University of Phoenix. His background also includes academia—both research and teaching. While pursuing a joint MS/PhD program at the University of Arkansas in microelectronics photonics, Mr. Turner conducted research in semiconductor fabrication and also taught courses in the computer systems engineering department. Upon joining Lockheed Martin and relocating, he continued in academia, teaching data communications at Binghamton University. Mr. Turner has been the recipient of many research grants and fellowships, including a Doctoral Fellowship from the Materials Research in Science and Engineering Foundation, a National Science Foundation EPSCOR Research Fellowship, and a NASA Research Grant through the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium.

Mr. Turner resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
