TRI-CITIES, Wash. — A Washington Fire Chief died Wednesday while responding to a wildfire.
North Franklin Fire District 4 Chief Chet Bauermeister was killed when the ATV he was riding flipped backward on a steep slope, Pasco Fire Chief Bob Gear told the Tri-City Herald.
Another firefighter who was riding with Chief Bauermeister was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Bauermeister became Chief in 2003, taking over the job from his father, and was also an EMT assigned to the Basin City ambulance.
The wildfire was under control by Wednesday evening.
