BANNING, Calif. — The Mountain Fire in Banning was contained today, its spread put at 113 acres of vegetation, fire officials said.

Fire personnel reached 100 percent containment this morning and crews mopped up the burned area throughout the day.

The brush fire started about 10:35 a.m. Tuesday between Highland Springs Road and Mountain Avenue two miles north of Wilson Street.

For a time it threatened 200 homes in the Banning Bench area, although no homes were damaged and no injuries were reported, said the Riverside County Fire Department.

Roads to the homes were closed temporarily Tuesday but were reopened a few hours later.

Nearly 300 firefighters responded to the Mountain Fire that was sparked when a bird touched a power line, caught fire and dropped to the ground.
