KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City Fire Department pumper operating with lights and sirens struck a car that failed to yield, then hit two more vehicles and a pedestrian Friday morning on Swope Parkway.
The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but his condition was later upgraded to stable, non-life-threatening, police said.
The four-vehicle crash occurred at 11:05 a.m. when Pumper 29 was headed north on Swope Parkway and swerved to miss a Mercury that was eastbound on 59th Street and pulled out in front of the pumper. The left rear and tire of the pumper hit the Mercury, then the right front of the pumper struck the pedestrian as he was putting items into his Ford F-150 pickup that was parked along the curb on the north side of East 59th Street. The impact sent the pickup into the back of a nearby Ford Focus that was parked with the driver sitting inside.
A woman in the Focus was treated at an area hospital and released. The pumper carried four firefighters, none of whom complained of injuries.
Police said the man who was driving the Mercury left the scene, but the car later returned with a female driver. The investigation is ongoing.
The crash closed the intersection for about two-and-a-half hours.
