FLORENCE, Ore. — A volunteer firefighter and EMT was killed on her way to work this week.
Sarah Susman, 22, was driving on the highway in a Toyota Prius when a logging truck tipped over, crashing into Susman’s vehicle, according to Oregon State Police, KVAL reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Susman worked as a part-time EMT for the Western Lane Ambulance District, MidValley Ambulance and as a volunteer for the Lowell Fire District and had recently graduated from the University of Oregon.
Colleagues say they tried to coax Susman into becoming a paramedic, but she had plans to become a doctor.
“We tried to talk her into applying for the paramedic class and pursue a career working with us, but she wanted to be a doctor and was applying to multiple medical schools in the northwest,” Western Lane Ambulance Paramedics/EMTs Local 851 said in a statement. “She would have been an amazing doctor. She was incredibly intelligent with a pure, happy and compassionate heart.”
