HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — Hanover County Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Lawrence J. “Jeff” Phipps, Sr., died on July 18 after a short battle with cancer.

NBC 12 reported that Phipps, 50, was diagnosed in February.

Phipps’ joined the Hanover County Fire-EMS Department as a volunteer firefighter, then later transitioned to a career member in 1996.

The department announced Phipps’ death in a Facebook post. One commenter wrote, “Thank you for leaving a very positive and lasting impact on my life and all the others who had the honor of knowing and working with you.”
