JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Firefighters were called to a woman’s home in Northwest Jacksonville when she started having trouble breathing. Once she was out of her house and in an ambulance, her heart rate immediately came back down and her breathing returned to normal. Firefighter Jim Polkey recognized the problem right away.
The culprit? Her house. She had no air conditioning. It was dangerous for her to just be inside.
“My concern that weekend was that my pool was 94 degrees, but this woman couldn’t breathe because her house was 94 degrees,” said Polkey in disbelief. “Some of the runs bother me and some of them don’t, but this one stuck with me.”
