Firefighters build play firehouse for boy with spina bifida

Aaron Cater, 4, decided a year ago that he wanted to be a firefighter and frequently visits the Port Arthur Fire Department

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — At the age of 4, Aaron Cater promoted himself to fire captain. There was one obstacle, however. He needed firefighters to command. So, he recruited his two brothers and cousins, solving his leadership problem. On Saturday, Aaron’s role as chief climbed to a new level of power when Port Arthur firefighters unveiled the Groves boy’s very own firehouse.

Aaron, now 6, has spina bifida, a birth defect in which the spinal cord does not form and close as it should. As a result, Aaron has no legs. That doesn’t limit Aaron. Using his arms and lower torso for support, he climbed up and down the wooden stairs that lead into the play firehouse.

Aaron had a difficult time deciding if he wanted to stay upstairs in the playhouse, where he had a bed that he could lay in while gazing below, or if he wanted to hang out downstairs, where he could roll down a steel garage door over and over.
