BOSTON — Firefighters who were given free tickets to the World Series donated them to child burn victims instead of attending themselves.
WHDH reported that the Boston Fire Department paid it forward after receiving five Game 1 World Series tickets from UFC fighter Conor McGregor.
Thanks to their generosity, five patients receiving treatment for traumatic burn injuries at the Shriners Hospital for Children attended the game at Fenway Park.
“I will never forget this,” one patient said. “It’s an experience that I will never forget. It’s very cool.”
Fire Chief Joseph Finn gave the tickets to the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation after McGregor presented them to the department when the Red Sox secured their spot in the World Series. The foundation then presented them to the hospital.
“As much as the firefighters would have enjoyed attending the game, and they appreciate the gesture by Conor, they felt as though they could be used in a bigger fashion,” a fire official said.
Shriners Hospital Senior Child Life Specialist Hillary Smith said the hospital was “incredibly grateful to the Boston Fire Department.”
“They’re a really important part of our family at Shriners and our community and we’re just really grateful that they can bring this experience to the kids,” she said.
