DECATUR — A firefighter fell through a hole in the floor of a burning house Wednesday, hurting his ankle. Two pets were killed in the fire.

Crews were dispatched to the 1 1/2 wood-frame home in the 1600 block of West Garfield Avenue at 7:06 p.m. Wednesday, the Decatur Fire Department said in a statement.

They arrived to find the house “fully involved in fire, with heavy fire blowing out of openings on all sides,” the statement said.

It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control and crews were on the scene for more than three hours, the department said.

A cat and dog were killed.

The injured firefighter was treated at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital and released.

The house did not have smoke detectors. The fire is under investigation.
