Safety Network: World Safety Conference & Exposition to be held June 4–8

Beginning June 4, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host the 2006 World Safety Conference & Exposition (WSC&E) at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the five-day conference, which runs June 4–8 and includes two days of pre-conference seminars and a three-day product exposition. More than 250 exhibitors will showcase products ranging from sprinkler systems and services, to extinguishing equipment and chemical agents, to fire pump controls, fire alarms and control panels.

Conference speakers include George Ockuly, NFPA chairman, and James Shannon, NFPA president. Acting FEMA Director R. David Paulison will be the featured speaker from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on June 5. His presentation, “Hurricane Katrina: Lessons Learned,” will provide valuable insights on how the response to Hurricane Katrina may have influenced the responses to hurricanes Rita and Wilma.

As part of the conference, industry experts will be recognized and receive awards in areas including fire safety education, research, development of codes and distinguished service. In addition, hundreds of experts will lead more than 130 educational sessions. Included are a special symposium about the latest in fire-hazard assessments for liquid natural gas and a discussion with Carolyn Merritt of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board about “Significant Investigations Conducted by the Chemical Safety Board: Emergency Planning and Response Issues.”

Pre-conference seminars are available to attendees for an additional registration fee and will feature industry experts providing information and insights about timely topics and issue including, “The National Preparedness Standard on Developing Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs,” “Fire Protection Systems Plan Review,” “Fire and Explosion Investigations,” and “Security Vulnerability Assessment.”

During the last two days of the event, NFPA members will vote on new safety and building codes that will be adopted around the world, including NFPA 13: Installation of Sprinkler Systems and NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm Code.
