UK fire crew assaults drop after campaign

LOTHIAN, Scotland — A groundbreaking campaign by a Scottish fire brigade has led to a dramatic turnaround in the number of attacks on crews trying to put out blazes.

Hundreds of teenage potential troublemakers have spent a week with the officers learning what they do and taking part in role-playing exercises.

The so-called Cool Down Crew, or CDC, is run by the Lothian and Borders Brigade and aims to educate children about the firefighters’ jobs and the risks they face on a daily basis.

And the lessons appear to be working because so far this year, there have been only 11 recorded incidents of assaults on fire crews in the capital, compared with 26 over the same period in 2006.
