Hydrants are often buried by snow, making them difficult to locate and use. Most municipalities will have a by-law requiring residents to clear hydrants that are in front of their houses.
This is not always done and it falls to the fire department to ensure that all hydrants are clear. Marking hydrants with snow markers will help locate them during winter months.
