Firefighters save baby after woman delivers in taxi

The baby was stuck in its mother’s clothing and was not breathing; firefighters helped revive the baby

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Wayne Township first responders got a call this week that they will always remember.

A woman was in labor in a taxi, in the middle of a downpour. But that wasn’t even the biggest surprise. “It came in as ‘O.B., childbirth.’ We start heading down the road and get there and see someone waving us down to a minivan taxi,” said Wayne Township Fire Lt. Ken Feckete. “I asked her what’s going on and she said, ‘It’s in my pants!’ So I said I have to check and I lifted her clothing and there was the baby in her pant leg.”

The woman had already given birth in the back of the taxi. The firefighters’ job now was to make sure the new mother and her newborn were safe.
