MILLBURN, N.J. — Millburn firefighters were able to hone their life-saving skills in a realistic way July 23 using a vacant house in Short Hills. The ranch house, which is slated for demolition, was pumped full of theatrical smoke, making visibility virtually impossible.
According to Capt. Jim Boyle, the fire department’s training officer, the task before his men was to locate and rescue a “fallen firefighter” inside. The scenario, Boyle said, was firefighters battling a basement fire in the house have been called out after the battalion chief sees fire breaking out in the roof above them
All but one of the firefighters have escaped. Now, a two to four-man Rapid Intervention Team, must go back in and find the missing firefighter.
