SAN FRANCISCO — There was no waiting for the baby boy that firefighter and paramedic Jesse Lange delivered Monday morning.
Just before 4 a.m., Lange, a South San Francisco fire captain, and another firefighter responded to a home after they had gotten a call that a woman was having pregnancy issues, according to a news release from the city.
The crew intended to get the woman to a nearby hospital in time for her to be looked at by doctors, but at the intersection of Highway 101 and Interstate 380, the baby boy did not want to wait.
Lange helped the unidentified woman deliver the boy, who had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. The crew was able to give resuscitative help to the baby, who is now doing just fine, according to the news release.
Both the mother and the boy were taken to a nearby hospital where they are now getting ready to head home.
“I was really impressed with how calm the mother was throughout the whole ambulance ride,” Lange said in the news release. “When we first got the call, I figured we’d get to the hospital on time -- but this little boy was ready to meet the rest of us.”
“It’s an amazing feeling to be a part of such a special moment,” he added.
According to the city, every firefighter at the department is required to be or has been a paramedic. Of the more than 70 firefighters on staff, the department can count on one hand the firefighters who have delivered a baby.
