LYNCHBURG, Va. — Joel Starnes had other plans that day. Then the call came. This one was a house fire in Forest. Starnes joined 60 other firefighters in battling that blaze.
He left at 1 p.m., and returned nine hours later.
He had planned to take his 10-year-old son to the weigh-in for the Boy Scout derby. But by the time he got home the event had been over for hours, and his son couldn’t race the next day.
