Fire rages through a large structure with numerous businesses in Elizabeth

ELIZABETH, N.J. — Firefighters were battling a four-alarm fire early Friday at a large industrial building the historic Singer Sewing Machine factory that has been converted into space for dozens of businesses in Elizabeth that has already led to a partial collapse.

The building in the 100 block of Trumball Street , which houses numerous businesses, caught fire around 5:30 a.m. , according to a city spokeswoman. No one was believed to be inside when it started and there are no reports of injuries.

“It is currently a heavy fire and spreading, with some of the building already collapsed,” the spokeswoman said. A passerby spotted flames and called 911, the spokeswoman said.

The building is where Singer Sewing Machine Manufacturing Company purchased 32 acres of land in 1873 and established its first factory in the United States . At the time, the building was the largest workforce plant in the world for a single establishment.

Public records show the building sold for $1 million in August 2023 .
