WEST COVINA, Calif. — The West Covina Firefighters’ Association held its “Hair Be Gone” event Saturday to support their Capt. Doug Montgomery’s wife, Laura, who has breast cancer.
If she can raise $1,800, Laura plans to participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara in September.
Dozens of firefighters and residents arrived at Station 2 to be “balded” to raise money for Laura’s entrance fee.
“I was so shocked the guys at the station were going do this for me,” said Laura, who lives in Chino Hills. “Every time Doug came to tell me, I would start crying because I couldn’t believe they would take the time out of their day to help me.”
Diagnosed with breast cancer in February, Laura, 46, is scheduled to undergo a mastectomy.
She wants to walk to raise money toward curing the disease.
“If I can help somebody else not go through the same journey I’m going through, I’m going to do my best to give back,” she said.
