KALGOORLIE, Australia — Firefighters have banded together to present a woman with a cheque after fire destroyed her home last month.

The $1500 cheque is part of the WA Career Firefighters Fund for Children which career firefighters donate money to every week.

It is a certain amount per child, it is to help replace some of the kids’ clothing, their toys and assist the families, Kalgoorlie station officer Martin Cable said.

Fire gutted Leanne Barnes’ Federal Road home leaving her with almost nothing.

Leanne had her whole family staying there with her at the time, all of her children and grandchildren, Mr Cable said.

They lost pretty much everything that was in the house.

Ms Barnes said it had been hard moving to a new home and rebuilding after the fire.

I’m thankful for the help. I’m slowly settling in now and getting back on my feet after losing the house, it is hard, she said.

I lost just about everything.

Mr Cable said the heat from most fires usually damaged everything and even though things didn’t look as if they were damaged they most likely were.

A message we really need to get out is working smoke alarms save lives and if you have got a smoke alarm and it goes off you will be notified so much earlier, he said.

If it happens at night you are not going to be notified without a smoke alarm.
