Iowa firefighters shave heads to raise cancer funds

Firefighters’ hair-dos judged to help local woman fighting breast cancer

WATERLOO, Iowa — An Iowa fire department has been proving to be a cut above for the past three months.

Firefighters from the Waterloo Fire Department took part in a fundraiser for Tiffini Kieler, a local woman fighting breast cancer.

For a 12-week period, the firefighters either shaved their heads, or for those who regularly sport a sheared head, grew out their hair into funky up-dos.

Kieler judged the firefighters for the best hair.

“I didn’t think I’d be so emotional, but it’s an honor to see what they’ve gone through in the past three months, for me,” Kieler told the WCF Courier.

For the firefighters raising money and showing off mohawks has been pretty fun, according to Waterloo firefighter and fundraiser organizer Ty Graham.

“We take it for granted the way you are in your regular life,” Graham said. “It helps to put it in perspective when people have an illness like cancer, how dramatic their lives change.”
