NEW ORLEANS — Oct. 13 is the date selected for the Second annual Metro Firefighters Association Benefit Golf Tournament.
The event will be held at the Lakewood Golf Course in Algiers and benefits the National Fallen Firefighters Association. Doug Daussin of Fire District No. 4 in Mandeville said departments from Orleans and Jefferson parishes and elsewhere will join together to make sure the occasion is not only fun for all participants, but financially successful as well.
Daussin also revealed that the group is expecting the participation of the NFL Players Association and of the NBA. Players from both the Saints and the Hornets will be on hand to lend their support and assistance.
Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu has offered his support as well.
Local firefighters from the north shore are actively involved in seeking sponsorships and doing whatever legwork is required.
The Lakewood course was purchased a few years ago by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund. In addition to being a good course for serious golfers, it is a showcase that is worth viewing. Daussin said that one of the sand traps has been configured to look like a raging fire, complete with red sand to indicate the flames. There are also a number of sculptures dotting the area that provide a pleasant atmosphere for golfers, workers and visitors.
A number of prizes will be awarded, including those for a hole in one, closest to the hole contests and more. Daussin said last year, one lucky participant won a Harley Davidson for shooting a hole-in-one during the tournament.
Participants will be limited, although the tournament will include two flights. To be assured of getting a spot in this worthwhile and fun competition, golfers should call Lakewood Golf Course at 504.373.5926.
