LODD: NY firefighter dies in bunkroom after call

The cause of death is still unclear, but he had complained of not feeling well before going to bed

BINGHAMPTON, N.Y. — Binghampton firefighter John Janos was found dead early Saturday morning at the fire station. Firefighter Janos had 25 years of service on the department; he was 57 years old.

FirefighterCloseCalls.com reports that Firefighter Janos responded to a call shortly after midnight. During the automatic fire alarm call, Firefighter Janos climbed several flights of stairs; he later reported feeling ill with symptoms of indigestion.

Firefighters check on him at 7:30 a.m. and found him dead.

“John was a valued member of the department and a trusted friend,” Binghampton Fire Chief Daniel Thomas told PressConnects.com. “He had a true feeling of what it meant to help others.”

During his career he’d served one term as union president.

“He did a fine job as our union president, represented the department very well, and he always put the guys first,” said Fire Marshal Dan Eggleston. “We’re all lucky to have known him — the whole fire department is in shock.”
