OKLAHOMA CITY — The death of an Oklahoma firefighter shows the need for fire departments to use medical evaluations to help prevent similar fatalities, according to investigators.

Cpl. Christopher Allen Dill of the Oklahoma City Fire Department died March 4 last year after responding to a fire at an apartment complex, according to a NIOSH report released Friday.

Crew members performed advanced life support and CPR immediately after Dill collapsed, but he did not survive.

The report recommends fire departments provide medical evaluations consistent with NFPA 1582, including an exercise stress EKG test, to help reduce the risk of heart attacks and sudden cardiac arrest among firefighters.
