Pinellas Park Fire Department Supports Retired Firefighter Suffering with ALS

TAMPA, Fla. — Ed Bigger spent his career risking his life for others, but now in what should have been quiet years of retirement, Bigger is fighting a disease perhaps even more dangerous than the fires he fought in younger years. Bigger has been diagnosed with ALS, a devastating illness that doctors say will claim his life. Yet, a band of firefighters in Pinellas Park have rallied in support behind the 36-year firefighter veteran and are determined to make a difference for Bigger and for hundreds of patients like him in the community.

“I feel like I have a never ending family of brothers and sisters, and it has given me the strength to face what is to come,” Bigger said. “I don’t know what I would do without these men and women of courage in my corner.”

The Pinellas Park Fire Department has formed a team for The ALS Association’s upcoming Tour de Vie — a cycling event to defeat Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The firefighters will pedal on November 7 in Bigger’s honor. All funds raised through the ride support patient services and research to find a cure for ALS.

“I now realize how important every donation is in the fight against this killer disease,” Bigger said. “It just never hits you until you are wearing the shoes!”

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a devastating illness that progressively paralyzes its victims, attacking nerve cells and pathways in the brain or spinal cord. Within two to five years, patients are robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. ALS is fatal and currently has no known cause or cure.

“My outlook on life has changed so much,” Bigger said. “I listen more. I talk more. I appreciate every little thing more. But as with any diagnosis leading to an end of life, you always wish you had a do-over.”

The Pinellas Park Firefighters have already raised over $500 for Tour de Vie and have a goal of raising $2,000. The cycling event is designed for everyone — from the occasional rider to the experienced enthusiast. Participants can choose from one of three routes: 5-Mile Family Fun Ride, 25-Mile Challenge, or 100 K Century Loop. Each route takes riders through the scenic parks and cityscapes of Pinellas County.

“I am hoping all of the firefighters join in,” Bigger said. “I am going to try to be there at the finish line… God willing.”
