HAIGLER, Neb. — A San Mateo, Calif. man who disappeared last week on a cross-country train trip was found dead Friday in Nebraska, his family said in a statement.

A railway worker spotted the body of Charles “Charlie” Dowd, 69, in Haigler, Neb., an area between Fort Morgan, Colo., and McCook, Neb., according to the statement on a Facebook page set up to find Dowd.

“While the family is devastated, they would like to express their gratitude for the many prayers, support, and messages posted to the Charlie Dowd Facebook page, and for the efforts of the many volunteers who have helped search for him this past week,” the statement said.

Dowd, a retired San Francisco firefighter, was traveling to Canada to visit family. He was last seen Sept. 13, when his train was leaving Denver.

Amtrak officials said he may have fallen from the train that night.

His cellphone, luggage and medication were found on the train.

Volunteers and law enforcement joined the search for Dowd, and San Mateo police on Thursday sent two detectives to join the search.
